Skate One r.i.p. 1969-1993 was one of L.A.'s most legendary graffiti artists.
There are so many stories behind this man that need to be heard. I am
hoping to get emails from anyone who knew of him... friend or foe if you have
a story about SKATE please email us!
I read your article on Skate and it brought back a lot of memories. I can tell
you that I remember that big kid before he blew up. I remember going to
hollywood high school with him back in the day and really knowing how he
got his name. that knuckle head could not drop that board to save his life.
It was back in 85 when I first meet Skate. There I was, with Mase, Rem a
couple of other writers on the 217 (RTD) going south bound on Fairfax. All of
a sudden, this fool gets up and starts writing the most wackest tag you would
of ever seen. Of course, he perfected it and the rest is history. We later
spoke often due to the fact that he would often be at Hollywood high often.
I never really imagined that he would blow up to be the legend that he his until
I went up to the old CBS hang out spot and took a walk up the trail. I came
walking down the and looked to my left to see his picture ingraved onto a
plaque. I have to say, it was like flashing back to 85 again,..but in
circumstances that I wish would never of happened. It brought me back to
the last time I spoke to him late 1992.
I was rolling up to the old gas station that was one block north of wilshire on
Fairfax (the park). At first, I didn't recognize him. He was heavier than the
last time I saw him, but still, a good dude. We talked about old times. We
talked about the old Fairfax yard, Jefferson yard and all kinds of shit that
would only make sense if you wrote back in the 80's. After the discussion,
we shook hands and never saw eachother again.
