Inspired by Bronx-based hip hop community parties in the late 1960s,
downhorse and Reddroom productions present, “Beyond the Schoolyard,†a
two-day showcase of the evolution of hip hop culture.
An art show kicks off the event Friday, September 8th, 2006, from 7-12pm,
at Voz Alta Gallery, 1544 Broadway, San Diego, CA, 92101, and features
local artists Israel Serrano (Izzy), Romali, Sake, Zone and Los Angeles
based Seizer. The artists use spray, acrylic, and/or oil paints to create
artwork that mixes graffiti, comic book characters and captured moments in
hip hop history.
Break dancers, or B-Boys, in groups of threes compete for a $1,000
grand prize at the main event on Saturday, September 9th, from 6-11pm at
the Epicentre, 8450 Mira Mesa Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92126.
Special guest, Destijl, of the Beat Puppets/Kids of Soul will emcee the B-Boy
competition, as DJs, 1520 Sedgewick, Son of Jarel, Thumbprint, Burn One,
Norm Rockwell, Daks Isa and Jo-ill provide the beats.
By unifying graffiti art, emcees, DJs and B-Boys, “Beyond the
Schoolyard†works to keep hip hop alive in the community and further
promote its growth into a global subculture.
