Mek one...West Coast Artists...Rtdkiller...City BomberS...
Story by
Wisk WCA
50mm staff writer
There are many writers from this great city that have experienced Los Angeles live and un-cut . Many have come out and been around for a few years and many have come around and stayed around for more years than they imagined. But not to many can say they were Crew Leaders, or Trend Starters, Pioneers, or even an L.A. Legend. Mek one can though he wont say it, but if you know him than that fact is already well established. Mek's career starts back as a breaker. He was always up on the latest moves and practicing everyday so that if anyone ever wanted to battle, he would be confident enough to be ready!
Hailing from a junior-high school in Baja Hollywood Mek would find himself around alot of diferrent personalities and influences. He started to see a burst of Graffiti in his school and around the city, especially in Hollywood. He told this writer that his first looks were of kids like Zodiac, Alski, News, Dae, Frost, Demo, and Soon. Mek picked up on the writing element very quickly and started to collaberate with his first writing partner Rust. At this time Mek wrote Rek "I liked the way the letters looked." Rek and Rust would immediatly catch attention from the older writers and eventually, even beef! They took on the biggest crew... WCA! "Rust and I knew that eventually we would either squash the beef or get our asses kicked." One day they did run into WCA's and battled on paper. "Rival told me that if I knew what was good for me I would battle him, so I did. I think they were taken a little back at the fact they we were just these young cats." They impressed West Coast enough through the battle that a year and half later they both would become members of WCA as Mek, and Ser.
Mek was getting good with can control and started piecing up the various yards and having been influenced by the Big Apple's transit system he also loved rocking the RTD'S. "At that time I lived off the 4-line so I would always take the buses and rag 'em." His favorite line back then was the 217, "I loved the old brown foam above the back seats." When RTDKILLERS was first started on the 4-line it was Wisk, Ser, Triax, Price, and Mek that became the first members. "We always killed the buses, it was like our version of the N.Y. subway system." After alot of WCA and RTDK missions Mek found his roots again by hanging around Skate and Rob one(rip.) Thus, a new beginning and a new crew, Cant Be Stopped. He would rep CBS and different initials that he either started as crews or joined himself.
Through out the years alot of L.A. writers still tell me stories of how Mek one found his way around the city and how much they were influenced my his writing and piecing styles. Mek loves Los Angeles and the memories he's experienced over the years, but he always had a longing for New York, so much that he would eventually move there to live. Mek has lived there for the last 10 years with his wife and his career in Graphic art. As one of Los Angeles' most prolific writers Mek has seen his share of buses, freeways, streets, trains, and yards. So much that we can say here at 50mm Los Angeles that Mek one is a true L.A. Legend....
